Robbie Keane struck a stunning equaliser as Liverpool remained top of the Premier League and maintained an eight-point advantage over Arsenal.

Robin van Persie put Arsenal ahead after collecting a long pass from Samir Nasri that he brilliantly controlled before smashing home.

Keane’s equaliser was equally spectacular, drilling home a long punt upfield on the half-volley.

Emmanuel Adebayor saw red in the second half after picking up a second yellow.

Liverpool had been on top at the time of Adebayor’s 62nd-minute dismissal but the home team competed manfully after losing their Togo striker and were good value for their point.

The visitors could now lose top spot in the league if Chelsea defeat Everton on Monday, while Arsenal remain fifth in the table.

Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas said in the week before the game that defeat for his team would have effectively spelled the end of their title challenge.

Having drawn the fixture the Gunners remain in the hunt but an injury to Fabregas on the stroke of half-time does little to improve their prospects.

Rafael Benitez, whose team have already beaten Chelsea and Manchester United this season, missed the game as he recovers from surgery to remove kidney stones but the Liverpool boss did pick the team.

Keane, an unused substitute against Hull last weekend, returned as one of four changes from the team that drew with the Tigers.

Steven Gerrard played just behind the Irishman and the two combined after 10 minutes for the opening opportunity of the game. Keane looked to be yards offside as he collected a long ball but Gael Clichy had played him on and the striker laid the ball off to Gerrard, whose shot from 20 yards was saved by Manuel Almunia.

Arsenal took time to settle, struggling to play their fluent passing game. However, Adebayor forced a save from Pepe Reina with a header after he met Bacary Sagna’s cross from the right.

And Van Persie put Arsenal ahead with a goal of individual brilliance.

Nasri, returning after injury, picked out the Dutch forward with a raking pass but Van Persie was closely marked by Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger as he brought the ball down on his chest.

Van Persie created a yard of space with his second touch and smashed the ball into the corner of the net with his third.

Clear-cut chances remained at a premium but it was another moment of brilliance that saw Keane equalise with his third Premier League goal of the season.

Arsenal had been troubled previously by long balls upfield and failed to deal with an optimistic punt over the top from Agger that Keane smashed home spectacularly on the half-volley.

Liverpool might have led at the break but Gerrard could not quite find the target after sliding in to meet a low cross from Kuyt, who then went close himself with a low shot across goal that Almunia did well to save.

And the half ended on a sour note for Arsenal when skipper Fabregas sustained a knee injury challenging Xabi Alonso for the ball and was replaced by Vassiriki Diaby.

But Arsenal, who had struggled since the resumption, rallied after losing Adebayor and enjoyed a spell of pressure in and around the Liverpool box.

However, it was Liverpool who came close to a late winner, with a long-range strike from Agger narrowly missing the target and Nabil El Zhar heading wide.

Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes suffered another blow as they were held to a draw at Middlesbrough.

Emmanuel Adebayor headed the visitors in front after 17 minutes from Cesc Fabregas’s corner.

But Boro hit back and former Gunners striker Jeremie Aliadiere headed a fine equaliser from Tuncay Sanli’s fierce cross 12 minutes later.

Robin van Persie wasted a good chance after the break, while keeper Manuel Almunia parried Stewart Downing’s shot.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will view this as two points wasted as they try to keep in touch with the title pace-setters – seeing his side dominate possession but fail to take advantage.

Boro boss Gareth Southgate saw his revamped defence hold firm in the closing stages to earn a valuable point.

And the Gunners took a deserved lead after 17 minutes, although Southgate will be furious at his defence for allowing Adebayor so much time and space to head home Fabregas’s corner.

Diaby then tested Turnbull again after another corner caused more problems, before Middlesbrough hit back with a surprise equaliser after 29 minutes.

Tuncay was the creator with an instant driven cross, with Aliadiere reacting first to get in ahead of William Gallas and flash a fine header beyond Almunia.

The visitors were given a reprieve by referee Peter Walton five minutes later when he waved away justified penalty appeals as Adam Johnson tumbled under a challenge from Gael Clichy.

The visitors re-asserted their supremacy after the interval, but Middlesbrough were always a threat on the break.

And it took a fine save from Almunia to turn Downing’s shot to safety after Arsenal had been caught out by a raking pass from Julio Arca.

But most of the action was at the opposite end, with Van Persie shooting across the face of the goal from Diaby’s pass and then blasting over.

The Gunners introduced Nicklas Bendtner in the closing stages, and he almost made an impact as he forced Turnbull into another block at his near post, then headed off target when well placed.

They were Arsenal’s final chances of a frustrating afternoon as Boro held out for a draw.

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate:
“It has been an incredible week for dealing with setbacks, but the performance of the back four in particular, and in the circumstances, was phenomenal.

“We showed enough courage in the first half to get back into it and in the second half we had to dig in.

“I think a draw given all the circumstances is possibly fair, but we had to be very resilient to get it.”

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger:
“Nobody believes in us but we can show we still believe and keep going. At the moment, my team needs encouragement more than anything.

“Today was a game we would have lost at the start of the season. But now we have a better defensive balance and we are more of a team.

“We just lacked a little bit of that extra little thing that comes with confidence but we are a young team and that is why it is important we just keep belief and keep going.”

Emmanuel Adebayor’s first-half strike handed a below-par Arsenal victory, ending Wigan’s five-game unbeaten run.

Wigan came close to opening the scoring when Wilson Palacios’ deflected shot was smartly saved by Manuel Almunia.

Instead, Adebayor broke the deadlock when he slotted home a low effort after collecting a pass from Cesc Fabregas.

Adebayor almost doubled the lead but Chris Kirkland tipped his shot onto the post and Denilson also saw his drive cannon back off the woodwork.

The two sides met in the Carling Cup last month, when Arsenal’s youngsters ran out 3-0 winners against a near full-strength Wigan team.

But Arsenal’s seniors struggled to find anything like the fluency of their apprentices, while the visitors might feel that they were a little unlucky to come away with nothing.

But it was a different story after the interval, when Arsenal stepped up the pace and should have made the game safe.

Robin van Persie shot narrowly wide from the edge of the area and also went close with a free-kick, while Denilson cracked a 25-year shot against the foot of the post.

Full-back Bacary Sagna had two chances to get on the scoresheet but saw his near-post header saved and then shot over the bar after Wigan failed to clear a corner.

And Adebayor almost put the finishing touch to a flowing move but Kirkland did well to beat away his shot.

Mario Melchiot was denied by a point-blank save from Almunia, substitute Amr Zaki fired wide and Emile Heskey directed a free header over the bar as Wigan came forward with purpose.

Arsenal’s nerves were obvious and they were hardly being helped by substitute Emmanuel Eboue.

So out of sorts was the midfielder that Arsene Wenger took him off before the end.

Yet the Gunners hung on to claim three points, while Wigan will know they should have taken advantage of their disjointed opponents.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger:
“It was a nervy game because we were 1-0 up but couldn’t get the second goal. We played a bit with the handbrake on because we were so desperate to win it.

“But I must praise the team because they kept their focus and pushed it through.

“Eboue played for longer than I wanted him to. His concentration dropped a little bit and when the crowd got on his back that was difficult to see and accept.

“he has to come off as he had lost a lot of confidence – he would have been even more unhappy had he stayed on , given the ball away and cost us a goal.”

Wigan manager Steve Bruce:
“I cannot really remember coming to a place like this and having so much of the game.

“We really took the game to Arsenal and the manner in which we did that absolutely delighted me.

“On another day we would have taken something from the game – and we deserved to.

“We just needed a bit of luck, and better delivery at times in the last third.

“I am disappointed for my players but they gave everything they’ve got. They came and gave Arsenal a hell of a game today. “

Arsenal’s up and down season is in the ascendancy again after Robin van Persie struck twice in three second-half minutes to stun Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Johan Djourou turned Jose Bosingwa’s cross into his own net after 31 minutes to give Chelsea the lead as Arsenal’s title challenge looked to be in danger of suffering a potentially fatal blow.

And then, with Chelsea the dominant force, Van Persie delivered two crucial blows to earn Arsene Wenger’s side a priceless victory.

He looked well offside when he drilled home the equaliser after 59 minutes, then was on target again on the turn to complete a remarkable turnaround in fortunes.

Arsenal are turning into the Premier League’s great enigmas, responding with victories against Manchester United and now Chelsea just when they were being written off as serious title contenders.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are suffering at the place that was once their greatest strength – Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal knew they could not afford to slip up if they were to maintain a serious title challenge, and they started with real attacking intent.

Chelsea keeper Petr Cech was in action in the 13th minute, plunging to save from Samir Nasri’s low shot, with William Gallas – taunted mercilessly by the home fans – just failing to apply a crucial touch from the rebound.

Cesc Fabregas then tested Cech again before Chelsea demonstrated their threat, with a slick exchange between Frank Lampard and Deco almost creating an opening for Nicolas Anelka.

Arsenal’s early promise was then undermined when they conceded the sloppiest of goals just after the half hour.

Goalkeeper Manuel Almunia gifted Chelsea possession with a wayward throw, and when Bosingwa drove in a dangerous low cross from the right, Djourou could only slide the ball into his own goal at the near post.

In contrast to his strike partner Adebayor, Van Persie had been industrious and he tested Cech with a shot on the turn as Arsenal looked to fashion a quick response to Chelsea’s goal.

Arsenal’s carelessness at the back almost allowed Lampard to double Chelsea’s advantage six minutes after the break, the England midfield man failing to make a proper connection with an opening on the edge of the box.

Wenger’s side needed a lifeline from somewhere, and they were thrown one by the officials as they equalised in dubious circumstances just before the hour.

Adebayor rose to head down Fabregas’ free-kick, and Van Persie produced a stunning low finish to beat Cech again.

Chelsea, inevitably, pressed but Arsenal looked just as likely to add a third, with Cech saving well from Denilson deep in injury time.

Arsenal 1-0 Dynamo Kiev

Nicklas Bendtner (Arsenal-87)

Nicklas Bendtner struck a late winner against Dynamo Kyiv on Tuesday night to secure Arsenal’s passage through to the Knockout Stages of the Champions League.

There were less than four minutes left when the Dane controlled a long pass forward from Cesc Fabregas and thumped home the only goal from 10 yards out.

It was a sweet end to the Spaniard’s first match as Arsenal captain and just about deserved on the night.

Arsène Wenger’s side started brightly and should have lead before the break but they faded in the final 30 minutes and the eventual winner came when Kyiv were starting to fancy their chances.

Still a win is a win. And Arsenal have been bereft of good fortune in recent weeks.

This was hardly the dawn of a new age but it was a welcome fillip.

And that will do for now.

All eyes were on Fabregas and William Gallas ahead of the game. Both had missed the defeat at Manchester City, but the Spaniard returned to take up his new role as skipper. The Frenchman was back in the side aswell but, in the circumstances, under barely any less pressure.

Speaking of pressure, Wenger had tonnes of the stuff right now. An indifferent set of results had come about amidst (or because of) a lengthy injury list.

The latest were Samir Nasri (knee) and Abou Diaby (abdominal), who joined the queue at the treatment table after picking up knocks in training on Monday. But they were well behind the likes Kolo Toure (calf), Theo Walcott (shoulder), Emmanuel Eboue (knee), Tomas Rosicky (hamstring), Bacary Sagna (ankle), Emmanuel Adebayor (ankle), Eduardo (ankle).

That meant Aaron Ramsey came in on the right of midfield with Denilson moving to the left to accommodate Alex Song and Fabregas in the middle. Carlos Vela joined Robin van Persie up front so Bendtner dropped to the bench. Gavin Hoyte, a Premier League debutant on Saturday, was also named as a substitute.

It is too much to say this was a brand new Arsenal but there was certainly a very different feel in the opening stages.

Kyiv needed to win to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Technically Arsenal needed a win but, in reality, a draw would probably be enough.

Wenger’s men started with intent. Vela seemed determined to build on his Carling Cup potential and set up Ramsey to fire a shot straight at Stanilsav Bogush after nine minutes.

In fact the Welshman would have all four of Arsenal’s chances in the opening half-hour. However perhaps only that first one, and his slashed effort over the bar, were truly worthy of mention.

Kyiv were happy to play on the break and, though it seemed dangerous, little was created.

In the 35th minute, Van Persie twisted and turned in the area before firing off a shot that bounced off the body of the Bogush. The Kyiv keeper was coming under increasing pressure as Arsenal’s movement pulled apart the defence in front of him.

Gallas even had the ball in the net soon afterwards but he was clearly offside when he flicked the ball home.

However, just as Arsenal looked ready to take control, the visitors nearly scored. Gallas slipped and Ismael Bangoura raced through on the left. His sidefoot hit the outside of the near post and went behind.

The Ukrainians had a let off of their own five minutes from the whistle when Van Persie whipped in a free-kick and Mikael Silvestre knocked the ball over the bar from five yards out.

The half-time interval changed little. A couple of minutes in, Fabregas curled a free-kick to the far post where Van Persie collected. The Dutchman’s first effort came back off the keeper and his second was blocked by Gallas when it might have been going in.

Yet again Arsenal looked ready to take over. But yet again Kyiv responded with their best chances. Bangoura fired wide before Olexandr Aliyev crashed a drive in to the chest of Alumunia.

Suddenly the game looked wide open. Arsenal had been broadly on top throughout the game but Kyiv were now playing cup football.

However the impetus did not last and it was no surprise to see Wenger bring on Bendtner for Ramsey midway through the half. Jack Wilshere replaced Vela for the final 15 minutes. In doing so he became Arsenal’s youngest ever European player at 16 years 329 days.

The youngster had not touched the ball when Almunia saved point-blank from Artem Milevsky. The entire Arsenal defence was waiting for an offside flag that never came and the Spaniard’s stop was crucial.

But Arsenal could have sealed their passage through a minute later when Bendtner arrived inches too late to meet Van Persie’s penetrating low ball across the face of goal.

After that it seemed that Arsenal had settled for the point. With Porto winning in Fenerbache it was good enough in any case.

Bendtner’s quality finish made sure. However it was pretty incongruent with the run of play at that time. Aliyev’s second yellow card for pushing the referee was stranger still.

Still Arsenal go through. Let’s hope they have regained all their former strength by the time the Knockout stages comes around in February.

Aston Villa struck twice in the last 20 minutes to seal a deserved win and dent Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.

Gael Clichy headed Ashley Young’s cross into his own net after 70 minutes and Gabriel Agbonlahor raced clear to add a second 10 minutes later.

Young had seen a penalty saved by Manuel Almunia in the first half as Villa produced an outstanding display.

Brad Friedel saved well from Cesc Fabregas in the first half and Emmanuel Adebayor hit a post late on.

For Villa, the win will strengthen their belief that they can challenge for a top four place this season, but the result will be massively frustrating for Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

After watching his side respond to criticism by beating Manchester United at the Emirates last Saturday, Wenger watched his side undo all that good work against a Villa side who played with huge self-belief and attacking intent.

It set the tone for an enthralling first 45 minutes, with Villa the dominant force for long periods, troubling Arsenal with their pace in attack.

But Arsenal almost broke the deadlock after 15 minutes when Friedel saved from Fabregas and Curtis Davies needed to make a desperate clearance as the ball ran loose.

Villa squandered an opportunity to take the lead five minutes later when referee Mike Riley rightly pointed to the spot as Theo Walcott hauled down Young after a goalmouth scramble.

Gareth Barry, who has taken penalties so expertly for Villa in the past, was injured in a tackle with Fabregas in the build-up, so Young stepped up and saw his weak spot-kick saved by Almunia.

Young was causing real problems for Arsenal’s rearguard, and he twice posed a threat with a shot that Almunia saved and another effort that was off target.

Villa deserved huge credit for taking the game to Arsenal, but they were wasteful when presented with opportunities and missed another nine minutes before the interval.

Agbonlahor escaped down Arsenal’s right flank and pulled the ball back invitingly for Barry, but his shot was again kept out by Almunia.

The game continued in an open fashion after the break, and Wenger decided he needed extra cutting edge by introducing Adebayor in place of Abou Diaby.

They were central figures as Villa got the goal their enterprise deserved with 20 minutes remaining.

Bacary Sagna was down injured as Villa attacked down the right, and when Young whipped in a dangerous cross Agbonlahor pressurised Clichy into heading past Almunia.

Arsenal were stung into a response, and a minute later Adebayor’s header bounced on to the post and away to safety.

Villa’s threat on the break was even greater as Arsenal pushed in desperation for an equaliser, and it resulted in them doubling their advantage after 80 minutes.

Agbonlahor latched on to a long clearance from Martin Laursen as Arsenal waited in vain for a free-kick to be given and he shook off the flimsy attentions of William Gallas to beat Almunia with a low shot from the edge of the area.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger:
“It was a very bad afternoon because we were not sharp physically and beaten everywhere in the first half.

“I felt overall Villa were the better side. It is frustrating because we played at a kind of pace today that is not our pace. Villa played very well, but we were not sharp or incisive enough.

“We can play very well, but at the top level performances have to be consistent. I always say the first sign of quality is consistency, so this was frustrating after beating Manchester United.”

Aston Villa manager Martin O’Neill:
“We were terrific from start to finish. We came here on the back of two poor league results against Newcastle and Middlesbrough to face a massive test – and we passed it with flying colours.

“We were magnificent and the players were very strong mentally today. I thought we were brilliant because it was a case of the players staying strong, being positive and having a real belief that we could win.

“We never lost belief, never lost confidence and I am absolutely delighted.”

Samir Nasri struck twice as Arsenal beat Manchester United and delivered an emphatic confirmation of manager Arsene Wenger’s belief that they are still serious Premier League contenders.

Nasri’s deflected shot opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and he doubled their advantage three minutes after the interval with a powerful finish from Cesc Fabregas’s precise pass.

Substitute Rafael volleyed United back into contention with a minute of normal time left – but Arsenal survived six extra minutes and an outbreak of mass anxiety at the Emirates to claim the three points.

It was a victory they merited, with United creating and wasting chances, but never carrying the same sense of self-belief as Arsenal in a highly-charged atmosphere.

Arsenal have suffered 10 days of soul-searching and criticism after allowing Spurs to claim an unlikely draw and losing in acrimonious circumstances at Stoke City, but they responded with an almost open show of defiance on and off the pitch.

They even had the strength of character to cope with losing goalkeeper Manuel Almunia to injury in the closing stages to keep United at bay.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will have been frustrated by his side’s wastefulness, with Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo guilty of wasting obvious openings, but he can have no serious complaints about the result.

For Arsenal, this performance and result will have only made Wenger – who was given noisy vocal backing throughout the game – even more entrenched in his belief that he will not sacrifice his principles for a more physical style of play.

Arsenal were without injured Emmanuel Adebayor and the suspended Robin van Persie, while United predictably restored Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov after the Champions League draw at Celtic.

But Arsenal looked anything but under-strength in a vibrant first 45 minutes that brought a host of chances at both ends and a deserved lead for Wenger’s side.

It was United, however, who had the first opportunity when Arsenal keeper Almunia inexplicably picked up a back-pass from Mikael Silvestre inside the first two minutes.

Wenger appeared to have instructed Arsenal to probe United’s right-flank, where Gary Neville looked desperately uncomfortable at the start of what was a harrowing afternoon for the England defender.

Gael Clichy’s cross was headed off target by Nicklas Bendtner, who then failed to get on the end of another dangerous ball from Nasri.

Rooney missed an even better chance for United after 17 minutes, carelessly lofting an inviting ball from Ronaldo over the top when it seemed certain he would score.

Arsenal took full advantage of the reprieve to take the lead five minutes later, when Nasri’s shot took a crucial deflection off Neville and wrong-footed Edwin van der Sar.

It was a wonderfully open game, but Arsenal were playing like a team stung by recent criticism and the sight of old rivals United had only inspired them further.

Fabregas had a shot deflected just wide, but United were threatening themselves and Almunia needed to save well from Ji-Sung Park.

If there was a frustration for Arsenal, it would have been that the crucial second goal had eluded them, despite their dominance.

They did not have to wait long to get it as Nasri doubled their advantage three minutes after the re-start.

Fabregas was at the centre of affairs again, punishing United for failing to pick up Nasri when he threaded through a perfect pass for the France midfield man to beat Van der Sar with an emphatic finish.

United, uncharacteristically, were lacking a cutting edge and wasted a perfect opportunity to grasp at a lifeline immediately after Arsenal’s goal.

Park found Ronaldo unmarked at the far post, but he dragged his shot across the face of goal with only Almunia to beat.

Almunia then required lengthy treatment after an accidental clash with Carrick as United refused to give up on the belief that they could get back into an enthralling encounter.

He carried on, but was clearly in discomfort and was replaced by Lukasz Fabianski with 12 minutes left.

United also replaced Rooney with Carlos Tevez and Anderson with Ryan Giggs in what was clearly a last throw of the dice by Ferguson as time ran out.

Rafael, who had replaced Neville in the 63rd minute, pulled one back in the final minute with a spectacular left-foot volley from the edge of the box after Arsenal failed to clear a Giggs cross.

Almunia’s injury meant six minutes of injury time, but United could not create another chance and Arsenal’s fans and players celebrated wildly at the end.

Theo Walcott’s sparkling form for club (and no doubt country) has earned the teenager the 02/Arsenal.com Player of the Month award for September.

There were already signs that Theo had stepped up a gear this season but he exceeded all expectations at the start of the month, netting a sensational hat-trick as England beat Croatia 4-1 in Zagreb. England’s youngest ever hat-trick scorer carried that form into the domestic game with an influential display against Blackburn, where he set up the opener for Robin van Persie and caused endless problems for the Rovers back four.

Theo operated on the right flank throughout the month and his soaring confidence made him a frightening prospect for opposition defences. Bolton and Porto also struggled to deal with the 19-year-old as he enjoyed the best month of his career to date.

Theo polled over a third of the fans’ votes in our September poll. Emmanuel Adebayor finished second after scoring five goals in September, while Van Persie came third.
